Private garden with railway sleeper planters

The project takes place in a private garden located on Avinguda Clota, in Sant Cugat del Vallès, with the aim of reorganizing the outdoor space and addressing the existing slope at the back of the plot.

The landscape proposal is based on the creation of different gardening levels using wooden sleepers, which make it possible to retain the soil while generating an ordered and contemporary composition. This construction system facilitates the integration of vegetation and provides a natural aesthetic that fits within the residential context.

The garden is organized around a central artificial grass area, which functions as the main usable space and visually connects with the perimeter planters and the terraced beds of the rear slope.

Garden structure

The garden design is divided into different areas that help organize the space and highlight the vegetation.

Central lawn area

The central area is finished with artificial grass, providing a clean, functional surface that can be used throughout the year. This space acts as the main living area and as an element that balances the composition of the garden.

The central green surface creates contrast with the planting areas and helps reinforce the perception of spaciousness in the garden.

Side planters

Along the sides of the garden there are linear planters defined by wooden sleepers, intended for ornamental shrub planting.

These planters create a perimeter planting strip that accompanies the visual flow of the garden and helps integrate the boundary fence of the property.

In this area climbing species have also been planted, guided with supports along the fence, with the aim of gradually creating a vegetated screen that provides greater privacy.

Terraced beds on the slope

The slope located at the rear of the garden is resolved through stepped terraces built with wooden sleepers.

This solution stabilizes the terrain and creates different planting levels that add depth to the composition. The rhythmic arrangement of plants on these terraces contributes to creating an ordered and balanced planting design.

Central element

As the main feature of the garden, a central raised planter has been created, also constructed with wooden sleepers.

An ornamental tree has been planted in this planter, acting as the focal point of the garden and adding verticality to the design. As the tree grows, it will generate a shaded area that will improve the comfort of the outdoor space.

Vegetation

The plant selection prioritizes species adapted to the Mediterranean climate and with low maintenance requirements, suitable for residential gardens.

The planting combines:

• Mediterranean ornamental shrubs

• aromatic plants

• groundcover vegetation on the terraces

• climbing plants along the perimeter of the garden

This combination creates a garden with diverse textures and plant tones, while maintaining an ordered and natural appearance.

Materials used

The materials used in the project reinforce the natural character of the garden and ensure the durability of the intervention.

Treated wooden sleepers
Used to build planters and terraces, allowing the terrain to be retained and different planting levels to be created.

Vegetal mulch
Applied to planting areas to preserve soil moisture, reduce weed growth and improve substrate quality.

Artificial grass
Installed in the central area of the garden to provide a functional green space with minimal maintenance.

Result

The result is a contemporary, structured and low-maintenance private garden, which resolves the existing slope through wooden sleeper terraces and integrates different levels of vegetation.

The combination of the central lawn area and the planting zones creates a balanced and functional outdoor space, adapted to everyday use and to the Mediterranean climate of Sant Cugat del Vallès.
