Vertical Garden Fira Gran Via: Smart City Expo World Congress, Barcelona 2024

Project Objective

The Barcelona City Council promoted the installation of a temporary vertical garden at the Smart City Expo World Congress 2024 to highlight the urban vertical gardening initiatives developed in recent years as part of the party wall plan. This project emphasizes the integration of natural solutions in urban environments to enhance environmental quality and citizen well-being.

The vertical garden was assembled in just two days, using a modular system designed for easy installation and maintenance, ensuring sustainability criteria in the selection of plant species and the efficient use of water resources.

Description of proposal

Design and Structure of the Vertical Garden

The vertical garden was built on a self-supporting structure, ensuring stability and adaptability within the exhibition space. To maximize visual and environmental impact, a modular vertical gardening system was chosen, consisting of 100×100 cm textile modules.

The selection of the modular system allows for:

  • Fast installation and dismantling
  • A versatile design adaptable to different spaces
  • Immediate implementation with full coverage from the start
  • A homogeneous distribution of vegetation with a density of 36 units per square meter

Assembly and Implementation Process

The vertical garden was assembled in different phases, following an efficient methodology to ensure optimal results within the established timeframe.

Installation of Textile Modules

  • Placed over the pre-assembled wooden structure.

Planting of Vegetation

  • Selected plant species adapted to indoor environments, considering their resistance and water-nutrient requirements.
  • The vegetation was evenly distributed, ensuring a dense green cover with high aesthetic appeal.
  • Final adjustments were made to ensure the correct placement of species and their anchoring to the textile modules.

Finishing
Once the planting was completed, a visual inspection and an initial irrigation were carried out to ensure the plants’ adaptation to their new environment.

This process allowed for a harmonious visual integration within the Barcelona City Council stand, reinforcing the commitment to biodiversity and urban sustainability.

Irrigation and Maintenance Systems

The implemented irrigation system included an initial establishment watering phase, ensuring proper hydration for the plants’ adaptation to their new environment. This system guarantees the garden’s preservation throughout the exhibition, minimizing water stress and maintaining high aesthetic and functional standards.

Conclusions

The temporary vertical garden at the Smart City Expo World Congress 2024 has been a clear example of how urban vertical gardening, developed in recent years within the party wall plan, can transform urban spaces into green and healthy environments. With an efficient installation in just two days, an optimal result was achieved, standing out for its versatility, positive environmental impact, and innovation in vertical gardening systems.

These initiatives are essential for building a greener and more resilient Barcelona, demonstrating that the implementation of natural solutions in urban environments is feasible, effective, and crucial for the future of smart cities.
